Caster shells are also numbered by power level (although not incrementally), the three most powerful being 4, 9, and 13. Caster shells are projectile capsules containing a spell cast by a wizard that has been contained, allowing non-magic users to fire the spell from a gun. His special weapon, a Caster gun, fires special Caster shells magic bullets that are effective against Tao priests and other entities protected against normal weaponry. Gene is well armed with a variety of weapons, including a pistol, grenade launcher, knife, rocket launcher, etc. Nevertheless, the scene at the cemetery shows how happy Gene and Melfina are being with each other, and indicates that the two of them had a happy life together. Before taking off with Melfina and Jim into outer space again, Clyde and Iris come to wish Gene goodbye at the spaceport, and Gene and Iris hug each other goodbye (in front of an "I LOVE GENE( ♥)IRIS" message painted on the hull of the ship, presumably by Iris), while Gene happily strokes her bottom like in the past, with Jim stands in a corner nearby looking embarrassed. Smiling back, Gene tells Melfina that that is what he wants as well, and the two share a long and passionate kiss before leaving the Leyline together.Īlthough genuinely in love with Melfina, and in a relationship with her following the events at the Galactic Leyline as indicated by Gene's wish to be with her forever, and by the way he lovingly looks at Melfina, strokes her face, and pats her head (boyfriends patting their girlfriends on the head being a custom in Japan) when seeing her at the cemetery back on Sentinel III, Gene nevertheless remains flirtatious with other women, or at least only with his longtime admirer Iris demonstrating that old habits die hard for him. Smiling, Melfina tells Gene that she wants to remain herself and to be with him forever. Realising that he loves her, Melfina cries at Gene's words, prompting him to ask Melfina what she wishes for. Gene tells Melfina that there is nothing that the Leyline can give him all he really wants is for her to come back with him. Circumstances lead to Gene and Melfina ending up in cyberspace, where Gene reveals to Melfina his love for her when she offers to grant him whatever his heart desires. Gene reflects on his regret on never (in his opinion) knowing anything about Melfina, together with his realization, now that she is gone, that he needs her. While on the Galactic Leyline, however, Gene comes to terms with his feelings with Melfina, realizing after she is transported away just how much Melfina means to him. It also results in him forming an antagonistic rivalry with Harry MacDougall, who is far more open in his pursuit of Melfina's affection. Throughout the course of the series, he begins to develop feelings for her, but is hesitant to act on them for fear of making himself vulnerable. After realizing Melfina had no recollection of her purpose or function, Gene promises to help her find her past and protects her from the various individuals in pursuit of her. Despite his brash nature, Gene does have a caring side to his personality which he usually displays toward Melfina. He has shown that he is almost never open about his feelings, however he has opened up to Suzuka on occasion. Gene is a reckless ladies' man and a bit of a pervert who shamelessly flirts with almost every woman he meets he would rather try to achieve his goals with a minimum of effort, and his reckless attitude proves a continuous source of frustration to Jim. While on Sentinel III, Gene met the much younger Jim Hawking and the two went into business, forming a company called Starwind and Hawking Enterprises. Gene is scared of space, until Hilda questions him, "Are you going to keep running away?" and Gene responds, " Keep running away?" Hilda's questioning of his courage is the turning point where Gene's fear of space gradually begins to fade. Gene was thrown into an escape pod moments before their ship exploded, and landed on Sentinel III where he would remain until the beginning of the series. This attack resulted in his father's death at the hands of a band of mercenaries led by Ron MacDougall. Gene Starwind ( ジーン・スターウインド, Jīn Sutāuindo) is a 20-year-old man and the main protagonist of the series who developed a fear of space flight and a hatred of pirates during an attack when he was 15. Gene Starwind Voiced by: Shigeru Shibuya (Japanese) Bob Buchholz (English) Suzuka and Aisha are more independent and are part-time crew-members. Gene, Jim and Melfina are the regular crew of the Outlaw Star. The following is a list of characters from the Japanese manga and anime Outlaw Star.
